TRANSCRIPT:

The true value of independent media lies in its ability to share diverse perspectives, especially in environments where official narratives dominate, such as in authoritarian or non-democratic regimes.

It’s deeply ironic that an organization established to maintain free flow of information in such conditions now faces similar restrictions. Those with political or financial powers are attempting to reshape the media landscape to serve their interests. Unfortunately, this puts you in the same position as us.

Having a credible platform remains essential for amplifying messages from the U.S., not just within our country, but globally. If America truly stands for democracy, human rights and free speech, it must actively defend and not suppress them. As much as business, diplomacy and cultural cooperation matters, so does the free flow of information and ideas.

If we genuinely seek global progress and collaboration, media must play a central role. Shutting down the Voice of America would be a step backward in promoting these universal values and surely, that can’t be in anyone’s interest.

Somborac is a Serbian political cartoonist known for sharp commentary on Serbian politics, media and society. His work has appeared in Serbian newspapers and has made him one of the country’s prominent editorial cartoonists.
