Voices supporting VOA

William Courtney

Former U.S. ambassador to Kazakhstan and Georgia

Portrait of William Courtney.

TRANSCRIPT:

Voice of America is more important now perhaps than any time since the Cold War. At this time, Russia’s committing armed aggression against Ukraine. It’s more repressive now than it has been any time since the Soviet Union existed. It’s vital that people all over the world, and certainly in the region, understand what’s happening. And Voice of America and other radios are extremely valuable in this respect. A lot of the coverage in mainline media is very helpful, but Voice of America digs deeper in many of these really difficult stories about human rights and repression.

Courtney served as U.S. ambassador to Kazakhstan from 1992–1995 during the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations and as U.S. ambassador to Georgia from 1995–1997 during the Clinton administration. He later worked on U.S.-Russia relations and Eurasian security issues at RAND.
