TRANSCRIPT:

Voice of America’s multiplatform content not only offered us information through audio, but also audiovisual reports. In addition, we’ve also worked with the documentaries made by the Voice of America, and we also had the live-dispatch service once a week to talk about what’s happening in the United States, from the political, social and often also economic aspects that exist in the United States. However, for a long time we haven’t had [these] due to the censorship that currently exists against the Voice of America.

There are constant offers to media outlets (I’m speaking on behalf of Latina), for example, from Sputnik, also from CCTV — the Chinese news service — and also from European agencies on international events. Many times, these come with a biased reporting style, with a different approach from the one that the Voice of America used to have. And that ends up drawing the attention of us as journalists, but also of our audience, because they don’t have balanced information.

In our country, a channel, a media outlet like Latina, has also faced many times government censorship, perhaps with the same methods, with the same models. However, for us, the strength you are exerting, the strength the Voice of America is exerting to remain still standing, inspires us to continue doing our job.

Alván is a Peruvian journalist at Latina Televisión, one of VOA's most important television affiliates in Peru. VOA's Spanish Service partnered with more than 680 media outlets across Latin America before it was silenced, enabling it to reach large audiences across the region.
